Weekly Writing Prompts for Marketing That Doesn’t Feel Gross
A weekly newsletter that uses journal prompts, etymology, astrology, history, magic, and so much more to get to the bottom of why marketing makes us feel so icky — and how we can do it anyway.
If marketing has never sat quite right with you — even though you know that your offering could make the world (and your life) better — this newsletter is for you.
Hi, I’m Nicole. I’ve been doing this work for 10 years, and honestly marketing has never sat quite right with me either.
That’s why this free newsletter is my favorite thing that I offer.
Every week, you’ll receive a note in your inbox that explores why marketing makes so many of us feel so squeamish and what we can do to reclaim it.
Without spending every last second of our valuable time doing it.
Without following the same 7 steps listed in every listicle.
Without sounding like everyone else — really.
Yes, our own self-limiting beliefs play a role in our discomfort with marketing. There’s fear in putting ourselves out there. (Imposter syndrome is real.)
But reducing it all to mindset work is also willfully ignoring a huge part of the picture.
We’re also uncomfortable with marketing because of the aggressive, colonizing language that it tends to use. Not to mention its “men’s club” history and roots in wartime propaganda.
So yeah — it’s understandable that we feel icky about marketing.
But we also live in capitalism (yes, big sigh). So marketing has power.
And yet… words have always had power. That’s why witches cast spells, isn’t it?
In short, it’s complicated.
And without a space to explore all our histories and traumas and the myriad of emotions that trying to market your work brings up, you’ll probably never do it. And I don’t want that for me, for you, for any of us.
If you want to get your work out there (not only to make a living off of it, but to provide real benefit to your audiences) then you must market it.
I hope, more than anything, that these weekly musings, from someone who’s been in the marketing game a long time (and yet questions it every day) will help you do that.
Why use prompts?
In each weekly email, I include a journal prompt to help kick-start your marketing for the week.
Are journal prompts necessary for good writing or marketing? Maybe not. But they’re the best tool we have.
Good prompts crack open windows to stories, ideas, and memories that you might not have thought about or recalled otherwise. Ultimately, they will lead you to tell real stories and communicate with your audience in a voice they’ll come to recognize and trust.
Prompts are not mad-lib templates. I’ve seen a lot of those floating around the internet, and while they may be strategic, they won’t sound like you.
My goal is always for the prompts to be thought-provoking, useful, and actionable.
If nothing else, these free prompts will do two things for you every week:
Remind you to communicate with your audience.
Make sure you’re never at a loss for what to say.
So if the mere idea marketing your creative ideas makes you squirm, I hope you join. It’s free and you can unsubscribe anytime.
And remember, if you believe in what you’re selling, marketing is not manipulative, gross, evil, or any other negative word your brain can conjure—it’s essential.
